June 12, 2019, 12:30h: Talk on 'KdV-based nonlinear Fourier transform in coastal engineering - Background and applications'

I will give a talk at TU Delft on the topic and results of my researchin the Faculaty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, TU Delft, on Wednesday (June 12th, from 12.30 to 13:15 in room 4.98.

Abstract:

The propagation and transformation of free-surface waves in shallow water is significantly governed by the influence of the water depth and the nonlinear properties of the waves. For a better understanding of the wave propagation and the underlying physical processes, the knowledge on these nonlinear effects is very important. Unfortunately, conventional Fourier transform cannot explicitly consider nonlinear waves such as highly nonlinear cnoidal-theory waves or solitons in the decomposition of the free surface. In contrast, the nonlinear Fourier transform is able to explicitly consider both, nonlinear waves (Stokes and cnoidal waves, and solitons) and their mutual nonlinear interactions, in the spectral decomposition of the free-surface data. Therefore, by application of the KdV-based nonlinear Fourier transform a completely new insight into the nonlinear processes of wave propagation in shallow water will be achieved.
The presentation gives a short overview and introduction into the background of the method. Furthermore, different applications in coastal engineering will be presented such as the propagation of long-period waves in shallow water, landslide-generated impulse waves, bore propagation and soliton fission over reefs with finite and infinite width.

May 1st, 2019: Starting of my new position as postdoc at TU Delft, The Netherlands
My new position as postdoc is on the application of nonlinear Fourier transform on water waves within the work group of Sander Wahls, Research Group of Numerics for Control and Identification of Prof. dr. ir. M.H.G. Verhaegen, in the Department of Delft Center for Systems and Control (DCSC) at the Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materierals Engineering (3mE) at Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands.
I'm really looking forward to concentrate on continuing my research on nonlinear analysis of water waves in the new work group with now a total of seven PhD students and researchers dealing with nonlinear Fourier transform in fiberoptic applications and water waves.

January 1st, 2018: Back in my position as researcher at LWI
After the start of Dr.-Ing. habil. Nils Goseberg as the successor of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hocine Oumeraci as Head of the Division of Hydromechanics and Coastal Engineering at Leichtweiss-Institute for Hyrdraulic Engineering and Water Resources, I'm back in my previous position as researcher within my DFG-funded project: Back to nonlinear Fourier transform and ship-wave analysis. Furthermore, I will continue my research from my office at LWI, not longer from FZK, Hannover.
2017
April 1st, 2017: Taking over the job as Interim Head of Division after the retirement of Prof. Oumeraci
Starting from today, I will serve as Interim Head of Division after the retirement of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hocine Oumeraci on March 31st, 2019. This interim position includes all duties of a full professor and head of division, including all teaching and admistrative tasks. The position is limited until the end of the sommer semester (end of September 2019) or until a new professor as successor for the vacant position is found.
Annotation: The position is extended until end of December 2019, because on January 1st, Dr.-Ing. habil. Nils Goseberg will start as the new full professor in the Division of Hydromechanics and Coastal Engineering.

January 1st, 2017: Starting my DFG research project PaNSiWa at LWI, TU Braunschweig
Starting from today, I will work within a DFG-granted research project on the "Parameterisation of nonlinear ship-induced water waves (PaNSiWa)" within the module "Eigene Stelle (Own position)" that will fund me for the next three years. The project is based at TU Braunschweig, but the work will be done from my office at Forschungszentrum Küste (FZK), Hannover. FZK is a joint institution of Leibniz Universität Hannover and TU Braunschweig.

November 29, 2014: Award of the Matthäi-Stiftung for my doctoral thesis
During the graduation ceremony 2014 of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences I was awarded a price of the Matthäi-Stiftung for my excellent doctoral thesis. The engagement and the support of the "Gerhard und Karin Matthäi Stiftung" is very much appreciated.

November 24, 2014: Doctoral thesis published and Dr.-Ing.
Finally, after working on it for many years and the defense in February, I published my doctoral thesis via the University Library at TU Braunschweig. Now, my thesis is available as pdf file here: http://www.digibib.tu-bs.de/?docid=00058144. The thesis is written in Englisch, but a short abstract in German is given.
Furthermore, since my thesis is published and I got my certificate, I'm now allowed to use the title Dr.-Ing.

October 2014: Lectureship for Coastal Hydraulic Engineering at TU Darmstadt
Starting from October 2014 I got a lectureship for Coastal Hydraulic Engineering (Lehrauftrag "Küstenwasserbau", 1SWS) at TU Darmstadt for the Wintersemester 2014/2015. The lectures will be given by me and Dr. Krebs from Wasser- und Schiffahrtsverwaltung (WSV), who is giving the other hour of the lecture.

September 6, 2014: My IWASA2014 conference paper is available online
"Die nichtlineare Fourier-Transformation im Wasserbau: Grundlagen und Anwendungsbeispiele" (in German) is available online on the IWASA website. The link is also given in the publications list.

Juli 2014: Presentation at the Juwi-Treffen
I attended the 16th Juwi-Meeting at the Leichweiß-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, TU Braunschweig, and presented my results of KdV-NLFT analyses. The conference paper " Identifizierung von transienten Wellen im Flachwasser mit der KdV-basierten nichtlinearen Fourier-Transformation (KdV-NLFT)" (in German) is published in the journal "Mitteilungen aus dem Leichtweiß-Institut".

June 2014: New position at TU Braunschweig
Since June 16, 2014, I have an employment as Senior Researcher (Akademischer Rat) at the Institue of Fluid Mechanics (ISM) at TU Braunschweig. Since the position is part-time (50%), I still have enough time to continue my research on the KdV-NLFT and other nonlinear data analysis methods.
